The weight of the recommendation letter is directly related to whether you can study abroad, whether you can get a scholarship, etc. As a material for external contact, it is one of the more important documents. The purpose of the recommendation letter is to introduce the applicant's work, study and professional direction to the other party through domestic experts. Among the many factors that determine the success of applying abroad, a strong recommendation letter is one of the important conditions for admission, and its weight is second only to undergraduate transcripts and standardized test (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL) scores.

Most schools require applicants to submit two to three letters of recommendation, which are sent directly to the designated unit by professors, department heads or work supervisors.

1. Select recommenders

Recommendation letters are an important basis for understanding the applicant, especially in graduate courses. Applicants may choose a current or previous teacher, professor, or employer. The recommender must be familiar with the student's learning situation, understand whether the student's learning purpose is clear, whether he or she has a promising academic future, as well as the student's adaptability, creative ability, conduct and expertise.

The ideal candidates for writing letters of recommendation are one written by the department chair, one written by the professor of the professional course, and one written by his or her supervisor. However, if the other party makes no stipulations, anyone other than your own relatives can be the recommender. Recommenders should generally have senior technical titles, such as professor, associate professor, researcher, associate researcher, etc. If the recommender has a high reputation in domestic and foreign academic circles, has been hired as a visiting professor by the school you are applying for, or has lectured at the school, then the recommendation letter written by such a recommender will be very effective.

2. Contents of the recommendation letter

Recommendation letters should generally include the following content:

Basic information about the person being recommended. Focus on the individual's graduation date, school, degree earned, and individual professional experience.

The recommender’s basic evaluation of the recommended person. Focus on the recommender’s professional foundation, personality, characteristics, work attitude and estimated academic future. If recommending a graduate student, the recommender must further explain the basis for further study and current research capabilities. Obviously, an appropriate evaluation of the recommended person's foundation, ability and future is more convincing and has more practical significance than exaggerated praise.

Recommenders can focus on the awards the recommender has received, papers he has published, important academic conferences he has participated in, and positions he has held in student organizations or academic groups to support his evaluation.

The recommender must also clearly indicate whether the recommended person is studying abroad as a graduate student or visiting scholar, and what his professional field and research direction are.

If the university provides a ready-made recommendation form, it must be filled out carefully and item by item. The recommendation form generally includes a comprehensive evaluation of the student, which requires the recommender to indicate that the student should be ranked in the top 5%, 10%, or 25% of the students taught. This evaluation refers to the professor's personal evaluation, which can be slightly higher. In addition, there are often many items that are difficult to fill in on the recommendation form. In this case, you can fill in "I don't know" without having a serious impact on the student's evaluation.

The recommendation letter must be signed by the recommender at the end. It is best to send it directly from the recommender to the admissions officer of the school or the department head of the school you are applying to attend. If it is sent by the recommendee, the recommendation letter can be put into an envelope and sealed, and the recommender should sign the envelope personally to keep it confidential. The front of the envelope is marked "A Letter Of Recommendation", indicating that this is a letter of recommendation.

Recommendation Letter Sample 1 (Management)

Dear Sir/Madam:

In the capacity of the former dean of "Dalian Management School" of Dalian University of Technology(DUT), I am writing with pleasure to recommend Mr. Cai to your esteemed university.

I got to know him personally when he was taking the course--Methodology of Management Research (or Methods of Management as stated in his transcripts), a course I taught, concerning basic research methods, especially quantitative approach to management research. Then he took one of my other courses--Advanced Strategic Management. Mr. Caleb showed great aptitude on both courses and he got 78 on both, which seem a bit lower, but if you take the difficulty of the test papers and my strict grading into account, you will understand why such scores are still among the top five. Undoubtedly, he got excellent scores on other courses and ranked among the top 5% of his class after the first year of graduate study.

To my knowledge, Mr. Cai is not only strong in academics, but also in sports and social activities. He was the captain of the soccer team of graduateschool of DUT and led the team to play in the soccer league of our university for two successive years. He was also one of the main founders of the first academic club--"Management Forum" of the "Dalian Management School" of DUT.

After I left DUT, he still keeps in touch with me from time to time and I am pleased to see that he proved his outstanding capability in both researc

h and teaching position. Therefore I feel very delighted when he told me he would like to pursue his advanced studies in your honored program. I am confident that Mr. Caib will contribute greatly to your program as well as he did in the DUT. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information.

Truly, yours

From: Fan Pu

Department of the SPECIAL CLASS GIFTED for YOUTHS

University of Science and Technology

Hefei , Anhui 230026, P.R. China

July 1, 1998

Dear Sir or Madam:

I take great pleasure in recommending Wang Yong, one of my favorite students , for admission into your distinguished graduate program.

Mr. Wang was admitted in 1986 at 14 years of age into the SPECIAL CLASS for the GIFTED YOUTHS, my university's unique program that caters to the intellectual needs of unusually talented Chinese youngsters. It was a rare privilege he earned with his nearly impeccable academic performance through the years of his elementary and secondary school.

He impressed me almost as he entered into my university, a major cradle of china's scientific and technological talents. At the time, members of the Gifted Class all had to spend half a month studying by themselves the principles of calculus and then take an exam so that we could evaluate their self-study capability. Mr. Wang scored the highest grade in that exam. He also exhibited a keenly whetted mind dur

ing class discussions. To my regret at the time, his English was not as good as his mathematics or physics. But I noticed he made a point of working especially hard in improving his English during his five undergraduate years with us. By now, he seems to be at least as proficient in English as most of his former classmates in the Gifted Class.

In my experience with Mr. Wang, I was impressed with not only his extraordinary intelligence but also his ambitions and persistence . I am sure that Mr. Wang will be an outstanding student in any doctoral program that he may care to enroll in. So I would like to support him firmly in his quest recommendation into account when considering his application. I would greatly appreciate it you decide to accept him as he wishes.

Yours sincerely

Fan Pu
