Reflections on How to Be a Man, Do Things and Learn.
Be a man, do things and learn.

A year ago, in my opinion, physical education class in university was extremely relaxed. In class, everyone learned some basic knowledge easily, and there were not as many exams as now. Every class made us nervous.

However, over time, I gradually like Miss Hong's volleyball class. Although he gave us a lot of pressure, every class has a task, but there is pressure to have motivation. He makes us make progress and gain something in every class.

Moreover, the culture he brings to us in each class keeps us in touch with the outside world. Being a man, doing things and learning is a famous teacher's lecture hall of Ningbo University. But in Mr. Hong's class, we can feel that he brings us a learning method and an attitude towards others, such as seeking truth from facts, applying what he has learned, being virtuous and carrying things, and so on. The knowledge he teaches is never far-fetched and always good.

Teacher Hong's classroom culture is rich and colorful, which makes us look forward to every class. I know that he has prepared every class with his heart, because only with his heart can things be done well.

Cultural edification is a subtle process, which affects every student in our volleyball class. I believe it will affect more people.

Qiu Fazu: Be a man, do things and study.

When I read Zuo Zhuan in the Spring and Autumn Period in my early years, I remember a saying: "Be too virtuous, then make meritorious deeds, and then make a statement." Virtue is being a man, making achievements is doing things, and making statements is learning. As doctors, we are learned, but being a man is the minimum requirement. So I often think about how to be a man, how to do things, and how to learn.

First, how to be a man

How to be a man? This question is difficult to answer, and you can only feel and think by yourself. I've thought about it for a long time, and I think that to be a doctor and a good doctor, you must first be a good person. What is a good man? He is honest and upright, modest and filial, caring for others more than himself, and being an open-minded person.

First, be an honest person. Two things happened last year, which made me very uneasy. One is a graduate student of our college, who went to my alma mater, Tongji University, tongji hospital with a highly praised recommendation letter. However, his work is poor and his performance is not good. When he found out that the recommendation letter was false, he wrote it himself. Of course, he was also fired. The other is a doctor in a hospital who wrote a paper after further study in Germany, which was published in the Journal of our hospital last year (English version). As the contribution was accompanied by two letters from these two Germans, I agreed to publish it. This year, the two German authors found that they didn't agree with him to publish this paper because he didn't do this research alone. After further inquiry, we found that the two letters that the German author agreed to publish were false, written by himself and signed by him. Now the German author insists that he apologize publicly in English and German in the Journal of our college (English version) and demands that this paper be cancelled. There is an old saying in China: If you want to be unknown, do it yourself. If you do something dishonest, something will go wrong sooner or later.

A few days ago, I read a short comment in People's Daily on June 5438+065438+1October 5, 2004: When Ding Zhaozhong, a famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner, gave an academic report at China Southern Airlines, some students asked three questions, and Ding Zhaozhong said "I don't know", which surprised all the students present, but won warm applause from the audience.

Also, Pavarotti, one of the three tenors in the world, suddenly stopped at the climax of a large concert. There was an uproar at that time, but Pavarotti admitted that he had forgotten the lyrics. Please forgive me. As a result, the audience burst into warm applause.

As the old saying goes, "knowing is knowing, not knowing is not knowing, and knowing is knowing": knowing is knowing, and not knowing is not knowing. This frankness and honesty are indispensable qualities that every doctor or scientist should possess. I have always believed that the most honest and upright person is the smartest person.

Second, be a modest person. Some people came back from abroad or got doctorates. I believe that he has done a lot of fruitful work in a certain field of a certain profession. However, he lacks knowledge in other aspects, such as the clinical treatment of patients with different conditions, and needs to consult others. I am 90 years old, and I don't know much about new technologies and theories such as computers, nanotechnology, cytokines and genes. I always ask my graduate students, but I don't lose face because of it. On the contrary, they respect me more. Be a surgeon or get a doctorate, don't think you are superior. Think about it, a driver and an electrician will also become a good surgeon if they have the opportunity to study medicine.

Third, we should respect others and teachers. The reason for respecting teachers is simple, because everyone is old. If you don't respect your teacher, your students won't respect you when you are old. Dr. Wei Jianing said: Every doctor has his brilliant career peak, and there will be periods of his aging and retirement. How to treat retired teachers? They have no right to argue with you, at least in your heart, you should leave him a respectful territory. How profound and noble this sentence is!

Fourth, be a tolerant person. We should be open-minded and kind to others, especially if we are department leaders or superior doctors.

Second, how to do things

What I am talking about here is how to be a doctor, especially a surgeon. From 65438 to 0939, I started my surgical career in the University Hospital of Munich, Germany. One year after the operation, my tutor allowed me to have the first appendicitis operation. I remember when I had my third appendectomy, the patient was a middle-aged woman who died suddenly on the fifth day after the operation. Although the autopsy found nothing wrong with the operation, the tutor still stared at me seriously and coldly. He said to me: "She (the deceased) is the mother of four children!" This sentence 65 years ago is deeply imprinted in my memory, which has been educating me and affecting my style and attitude in my 65-year surgical career.

1947 crossed the ocean and went back to China for medical treatment. When I was working in Shanghai, a female teacher came to see a doctor. She had laparotomy 10 years ago. Since then, she has often suffered from indigestion, constipation and abdominal pain. I repeatedly examined her abdomen and found a lump the size of an adult fist, so I decided to operate on her. What I saw after caesarean section surprised me. It turned out to be a surgical towel, huddled up and tightly wrapped by intestinal loops. This foreign body remained in the abdominal cavity for 10 years! After recovering, the female teacher personally wrote a banner: "Life is decaying" and gave it to me with great pleasure. Such an incident illustrates a problem, that is, as long as doctors are negligent in their work, they will cause patients years of pain and even lifelong disability. I think, if this patient is a relative of the surgeon, he will definitely check the abdominal cavity very carefully after the operation to avoid leaving foreign bodies. You know, a patient is willing to let the doctor operate on him or her when he or she is unconscious under general anesthesia. What a great trust in the doctor! The patient's high trust in the doctor deserves to win the doctor's attitude towards his relatives! The doctor's attitude, even a few words, will seriously affect the mood and life of patients.

I remember that 20 years ago, a female bank employee came to me crying and said that she had an incurable disease-"thyroid cancer". This is a hasty diagnosis made by a surgeon in the outpatient department of a hospital. On the same day, her family of four hugged each other and cried all night. I inquired about her medical history carefully and examined her neck. I thought she was suffering from subacute thyroiditis caused by virus infection. After drug treatment, the goiter subsided and the symptoms disappeared after 3 weeks. The patient's whole family naturally rejoiced. This incident shows that if a doctor makes a wrong diagnosis without thinking, it will cause grief to the patient and his or her family. What a prudent doctor should say!

Once, an old lady came to the clinic and said that her stomach had been uncomfortable for a long time. I asked about the medical history, then let her lie down and carefully touched her abdomen. After the examination, she held my hand tightly and said for a long time, "You are really a good doctor. I went to six or seven hospitals, and never a doctor touched my stomach. You are the first doctor to examine me. " These words touched me deeply. I think a simple routine examination should be done by every doctor in order to bring such great comfort to patients. This shows that many of our doctors don't think: what is the patient thinking? Another time, an old pediatrician came to see me for consultation because of duodenal ulcer. I saw a niche in the duodenal bulb on the X-ray film, and the diagnosis was very clear, so I stopped giving him an abdominal examination. When the old doctor came back, he said, "I'm disappointed. Although Dr. Qiu gave advice, he didn't touch my stomach. " This reminds me that a doctor will have this idea when he is sick, so an ordinary patient will understand it better if he has this idea.

One Sunday 30 years ago, I went to a large state-owned watch shop in Zhongshan Avenue in Hankou to repair my watch. I asked a female comrade on duty: "This watch makes a noise when it is shaken. Would you please have a look? " She shook it and gave it back to me immediately, saying, "I can't fix it, there are no parts." I carefully repeated, "Please open it." She gave me an impatient look and said, "As long as I can walk, there are no parts." At this moment, I happened to find Comrade Hu sitting in another corner of this shop. He is my patient and an employee of this shop. I'll go over at once and ask him to check the reason why his watch is shaking so badly. He opened the back cover of his watch and found a screw loose. He screwed the screw in place and the watch was repaired. I am very happy, but I am also very angry. I pointed at it and said, "That comrade said it couldn't be repaired and didn't even look at it. I'm going to blame him. " Comrade Hu laughed and said, "Dr. Qiu, forget it, forget it!" Isn't it the same as your doctor? "Hearing this sentence, I couldn't help blushing a little, making a ha ha and saying goodbye. For decades, I have always remembered this sentence: "Isn't it the same as your doctor?" This sentence deeply inspired me and made my mood restless for a long time.

I have been engaged in surgery for 65 years. In these 65 years, I have seen and heard many mistakes and even accidents in medical work. Of course, the work of medical staff is very hard, and most of them are serving patients well. However, it should also be admitted that a few medical staff are blunt, impatient and unwilling to listen to patients' complaints. In the outpatient department of the hospital, I saw many patients who came from thousands of miles away. They have great hopes for help, diagnosis and treatment. However, when they came to see a doctor, some doctors gave no explanation in a few words; Some even treat each other coldly and reprimand patients. When we medical workers treat patients, we should form such a concept in our minds, that is, what should you do if the patient sitting or lying in front of you is your relative?

Third, how to learn

Learning is how to make more contributions to the people.

First, be diligent. To achieve something in one's life, one needs three conditions: ① IQ; 2 opportunities; ③ Diligence. We must cherish every minute! I remember that during the national surgical academic conference held in Yichang, Hubei Province five years ago, we had a half-day free clinic. I examined a female patient with goiter and needed surgery. The female patient asked me to schedule the operation on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I didn't understand at that time, so I asked her why. She said that on Sunday, the surgeon played mahjong all night, and on Monday, he was out of spirits. I have to play mahjong again on Friday, and I start to lose my concentration. I was shocked. Although this phenomenon is rare, it is a common phenomenon. How to cherish time and read more books is good for yourself and patients.

Second, we should lay a solid foundation and expand our knowledge. I have always advocated the rotation system for young doctors, and don't set up a specialist immediately; Universities are needed, but it is not good to be too specialized. Also at the surgical academic conference held in Yichang, I heard that some orthopedic doctors specialize in the spine, and some spinal surgeons specialize in the cervical vertebrae, even the above three cervical vertebrae, which is obviously not conducive to the growth of young doctors. You must know that the foundation is the foundation, and the roots can flourish. Only on a broad and solid foundation can we learn solid professional knowledge and further have creative ability.

Third, be diligent in thinking and be good at exploring. Professor Wu Jieping once said in The Surgeon's Growth that before appendicitis surgery, we should consider: Is the appendix inside, outside or behind the cecum? Is there adhesion around the appendix? What is the reaction degree of peritoneum? Is there a fecal stone in the appendix cavity? At present, there are many advanced equipments, such as CT, MRI and B-ultrasound. Many young doctors rely too much on these advanced equipment to diagnose diseases and forget the most necessary physical examination. My teacher once said: X-rays can distinguish three kinds of doctors: rotten doctors only read reports, not films; A better doctor reads the report first and then the film; The best doctor is to read the film first, and then read the report.

Fourth, learning must be rigorous and realistic, and pay attention to scientific ethics. In recent years, China's medical career has developed rapidly, and there are many achievements in medical scientific research. On the other hand, there has also been a phenomenon of impetuous and quick success in academic research. Recently, I read a critical article by Professor Zhu Yu, which is not rigorous and realistic about the scientific research style, and lists several abnormal phenomena, such as: some clinical research papers, false cases, fictitious follow-up results, and arbitrarily exaggerating the treatment effect; Some papers are scrawled and have many typos, lacking necessary statistical treatment; Some papers have simple methods and simple results, but their conclusions are infinitely exaggerated, saying that they are "advanced" or "leading"; Some research topics are divided into several papers published in different magazines; Some papers even copy the illustrations of other people's manuscripts, tables or other books, but do not indicate the source, which infringes on other people's intellectual property rights. This phenomenon is becoming more and more serious, and medical researchers, especially the younger generation, are urgently expected to pay attention to this phenomenon. I hope that the leaders of medical disciplines, especially graduate tutors, should carefully examine the scientific research work and papers written by their students, avoid impetuousness, advocate seeking truth from facts, pay attention to scientific ethics and establish a correct scientific style of study.

I hope it helps you. -
