Wei, one of the ministers of the Sixth Jin Dynasty, is the 44th surname in the population of contemporary China and the 30th surname among the hundred surnames in the Song Dynasty. Wei originated from Wei, a vassal state named Ji, which was enfeoffed in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, and was sealed in the north of Ruicheng County, Shanxi Province. After the state of Wei was destroyed by the State of Jin, it was given to the doctor Bi Wan, and later generations took the city as their surname and respected Bi Wan as their ancestors.
