But the translation by popular publishing house is the most perfect.
And it is also the earliest version we have come into contact with.

A version of the Sherlock Holmes series by Popular Publishing House.
One of the characteristics of the first wave of Sherlock Holmes was a large number of translations of Sherlock Holmes stories, but this did not happen in the second wave. Sherlock Holmes' novels were not all written in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, so there are naturally a lot of new works to be translated. With the publication of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes by Popular Publishing House, other publishing houses have no new stories to translate and publish. More importantly, the popular version of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes is well translated. For a long time, it was the only translation of Sherlock Holmes stories. Even after the mid-1990s, Sherlock Holmes story became a publishing craze again, and it is still the final version in the minds of many readers.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Sherlock Holmes series published by Popular Publishing House mainly has the following versions:
1. Sherlock Holmes detective series, 1957- 1958, with three books, namely, The Hound of the Baskerville, Four Signs and A Study of Blood Characters;
2. Selected Sherlock Holmes, 1978, a single book, including The Hound of the Baskerville, The Signs of Four, and A Study of Blood Characters;
3. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (I to V), 1979- 198 1, 5 volumes, complete works;
4. Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes (upper, middle and lower), 198 1, 3 volumes, complete works;
5. Sherlock Holmes detective novel series, 1992, with 9 volumes, namely Four Signs, uncanny valley, A Study of Blood Characters, The Hound of the Baskerville (above), The Red Hair Society, Devil's Feet, The Yellow-faced Man, The Silver Horse, and.
6. Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes, 1995, 1 reduced version, complete works;
7. Illustrated edition of adventures of sherlock holmes, 2000, with four volumes, namely, Devil's Heel in Red Hair Group, College Students' Examination Paper Case of Beggars with a crooked mouth, White Goose with Silver Eyebrows at Christmas, and Hound of Baskerville, all of which are rewritten;
8. Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes (1-4), 200 1, 4 volumes, gift-bound, hard-shell book cover, hardcover, complete works;
9. Selected Works of Sherlock Holmes, 2004, 1, including the study of blood characters, the symbol of four, the hound of the Baskerville and uncanny valley, selected works.
Except for 7 translated by Yang Shuhua, the rest were translated by Ding Zhonghua and others. 3, 4, 6 and 8 are Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes of Wang Fengzhen. 5 You Feng commemorates the centenary of Conan Doyle's abandonment of medicine and joining the literature (preface) (originally written in 199 1).
Among these editions, The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes (Part I, Part II) is the final edition of 198 1 (hereinafter referred to as three volumes). At present, the three volumes you can see in bookstores are reprinted in the 1990 s, with hardcover and paperback. Compared with the old three-volume version of 198 1, the cover changed from dark red to blue. The content has not changed. Why is the third volume the final volume? On the one hand, it is slightly modified from the previous Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (I-V) (hereinafter referred to as the five-volume edition). For example, the title of the sixth section of Four Signs was changed from Judging Based on the Scene (five volumes) to Sherlock Holmes' Judgment (which is more in line with the original expression after the change), and the word "judge" was changed to the current common name "penny", and so on, all of which were changes in some details. On the other hand, since then, the Complete Works of sherlock holmes or anthology published by popular publishing houses have been reprinted and selected according to this version.
The popular version is rigorous in translation attitude and beautiful in translation. After so many years of testing, it is still the first choice in readers' minds, which is of course inseparable from the translator's efforts. Now let me introduce some of them, and it is not difficult to see that they are all experienced translators. Ding Zhonghua, who is in charge of personnel, business team leader and English team leader, is responsible for and personally participated in the translation and proofreading of Strategic Surrender, Volume II of Memoirs of Charles de Gaulle, The Footprint History of Khrushchev, On the Escalation of War and Sidelights of the Soviet Union. Li Jiayun graduated from Beijing Russian Institute, majoring in Russian. He has served as the head of the Russian teaching and research group of the Central Political and Legal Cadre School and the deputy director of the translation editing room of the mass publishing house. He translated and published a number of foreign literary works, such as Selected Novels by Turgenev, Margaret of Waja Royal Family by Dumas, Call of the Soul, Black Forest, The Mystery of Roger, Night on the Danube and so on. Chen Yulun studied in the journalism department of Hujiang University in his early years and entered the National Southwest Associated University for further study after the Anti-Japanese War. 1944 was recruited to go abroad as a school translator for General Stilwell's headquarters in the Indo-Burmese theater of World War II. After liberation, he worked in Times Press, foreign languages press and Commercial Press successively, and became a professor-level senior editor of Commercial Press. English World Magazine was also founded at 198 1. It is said that Chen Yulun originally intended to refuse the translation of adventures of sherlock holmes, but at the kind urging of the famous translator Xiao Gan, she managed to find time to successfully complete the translation.
The popular version of The Complete Works of sherlock holmes is not perfect. If you scrutinize carefully, you can find some problems, but on the whole, it has little impact. The main loophole is the misunderstanding of some nouns and articles, mainly because the translator was unfamiliar with the local customs, geographical environment and famous things in the West at that time. For example, in the Bohemian scandal, the original text was "He is Mr. Gord Rafe Norton of the Inner Temple", which was misinterpreted as "He is Mr. Gao Weiruite Norton who lives in Temple." In fact, "Inner Temple Law School" refers to the Inner Temple Law School, one of the four institutions that train lawyers in London, England. Because of the legacy of Lartet Kay Hopkins in Leibannon, Pennsylvania. The Red Hair Association's "America" is translated as "the legacy of the late Lebanese Ciochia Hopkins in Pennsylvania." The "Lebanon" here is actually Lebanon in Pennsylvania. Another example is the beginning of Musgrave Ceremony, which depicts Holmes sitting in an armchair and shooting at the opposite wall. The original text is "his trigger and happy boxer magazine", which is misinterpreted as "with his pistol and 100 boxes of bullets" The correct translation should be "with his explosive pistol and one hundred boxer bullets". Boxer bullet is a standard bullet for shooting practice designed by British Colonel Boxer in 1867. The "King's College Hospital" in the inpatient department is translated into "Royal University Affiliated Hospital". "King's College" is a college of the University of London, that is, King's College, which is accurately translated as "Affiliated Hospital of King's College".
There are also some mistakes in context understanding. For example, there is a sentence in the original text of Inpatient: "Among his many gifts, the appreciation of nature can't find a place, and his only change is when he turns his attention from the evildoers in the town to the brothers in his country. And his only change is to visit his brother in the country. " We know that Sherlock Holmes' brother Mycroft lives in Bellevue Street in London, and he never goes anywhere else. The only place to go is the Diogenes Club opposite his residence. It seems that Holmes can't go to the country to see his brother. The "brother" here means "colleague" and refers to the "evildoer" in front. Therefore, it can be translated as: he has no interest in appreciating nature at all. And his only change is to abandon the bad guys in the city and track down the bad guys in the country. There is also a plot in the same novel: "Mr. Blaesing … is eager to go for a walk, which is the prelude to his meal." Here, the popular version translates "diner" into lunch. But later, it is said that a patient came to see a doctor at about six o'clock in the evening. Shortly after he left, Mr. Bresington came back from a walk. So it can be inferred that "rice" means dinner.
4.3 Overview of the publication of Sherlock Holmes' works since 1980s
After the popular version of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes was published, there was no publishing house to reorganize the translation and publication of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes for a long time, only sporadic selections were made. 198 1 Hubei People's Publishing House and Fujian People's Publishing House published Selected Sherlock Holmes Stories and Selected Sherlock Holmes Short Stories respectively, which were translated according to the English version of Selected Sherlock Holmes Stories by M Anthony Lauder. 1987 Beijing Children's Publishing House published The Hound of the Baskerville translated by Yang.
It was not until the middle and late 1990s that Holmes returned to the publishing list. From 65438 to 0997, Huacheng Publishing House published three volumes of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes. The greatest feature of this complete work is the use of the illustrations drawn by Sidney Petrchet for Sherlock Holmes' story in Seaside Magazine. Since then, the complete works of Sherlock Holmes have been published every year. After 200 1, the number of published complete works increased greatly, not less than 20 kinds. Among them, China Film Publishing House, Huaxia Publishing House, Yilin Publishing House and other editions are all equipped with illustrations drawn by Petrchet. The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes translated by Yu Bufan of Yilin Publishing House seems to have changed many titles in order to show the difference between the translation and other versions. However, many changed names will reveal the mystery, and the translator's preface before the book will also summarize the contents of the novel one by one, which is the taboo of detective novels. This kind of translation is inconsistent with the professional image of Yilin, an old foreign literature publishing house, and has been criticized by readers. Yilin Publishing House published the second edition in August 2006, which replaced the original leaked title and changed the translator's order to Cao's articles.
As for anthologies or long singles, there are many in the Soviet Union. 1996 to 2006, according to the author's incomplete statistics, there were as many as 30 kinds (not including the rewritten children's edition). Some of them are more distinctive. For example, Selected Works of Sherlock Holmes translated by famous translators Mei Shaowu and Tu Youyou (Shanghai Translation Publishing House, 2005). Based on 12 excellent articles selected by Conan Doyle at the invitation of the seaside magazine in 925, the book adds 9 short stories, ***2 1 Sherlock Holmes short story with strange illustrations. The translator's attitude towards translation is very strict, and some mistranslations in the popular version and other versions have been corrected.
Throughout the translation of Sherlock Holmes in recent years, many versions are similar to the popular version, and some translations are even sloppy. Zhang Wenqing and Lin Benchun's Chinese Version of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Comments on Some Versions (Journal of sanming university,No. 1, 2006) pointed out that Sherlock Holmes' novels have been translated a lot in recent years:
"Judging from the current number of translators and the number of publishing houses that publish this series of novels, it can be said that it is' overwhelmed', and duplication of work and waste are indescribable. Some recent translations, some of which may be aimed at seeking differences, did not follow the original translation, which also caused inconvenience to readers' reading and communication. And the translation quality is uneven. The mistakes made in the previous version also appeared in later versions. Some versions only slightly change the sentence structure of the previous version or replace some words without affecting the meaning. And some sentences are very' coincidentally' exactly the same. "
Sherlock Holmes' works are not bloody, and the cases are also very interesting, which is suitable for teenagers to read. Many publishers have adapted the story of Sherlock Holmes for teenagers. For example, 1998, Shandong Friendship Publishing House introduced The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes (5 volumes) specially adapted for teenagers by Taiwan Province Oriental Publishing House Co., Ltd.; In 2002, Xinjiang Youth Publishing House published 8 volumes of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In 2006, China Foreign Translation Publishing Company published a guide edition of Adventures, which included Wang Fengzhen's Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes (excerpt), Cao's Comparison of Conan Doyle and agatha christie's Creative Ideas (excerpt), Reading Adventures, and Zhang Xiaofeng's Let the World Be Less Evil and More Friendly.
The English version of adventures of sherlock holmes has also been published in China, mostly in selected or abridged versions, which are provided to readers as English reading materials at all levels. The earliest English version of Sherlock Holmes' works published after the founding of the People's Republic of China was The Hound of the Baskerville, an English-Chinese bilingual version published by Shanghai Translation Publishing House 1979. In 2000, The Four Stories of Sherlock Holmes published in foreign languages press included Sherlock Holmes' novels, which were bilingual and easy to read. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes published by people in Xizang Publishing House in 2003 is also a bilingual edition. However, the complete English works of Sherlock Holmes are quite easy to see in domestic foreign language bookstores and other places. Generally, they are two volumes of complete works in paperback, and the price is not high. In 2006, Shanghai World Book Publishing Company also published the complete works of Sherlock Holmes classic series in English.
4.4 Comic books, imitations and related reading materials
With the publication of the Chinese version of the novel and the introduction of TV series, various art publishing houses have published a large number of cartoons with this novel as the theme, which have been welcomed by readers once they are launched. The hound of the Baskerville (yellow painting) published by Zhejiang Fine Arts Publishing House 1979 was an instant hit, and then similar cartoons were published by Sichuan, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Fujian, Jilin and other fine arts publishing houses. These books are all selected from detective novels, which truly and comprehensively reflect the social significance of the original works, condemn all kinds of crimes, expose colonial plunder, and promote the idea that good and evil are rewarded and the law cannot escape. In addition, most of them are painters who rose in the 1970s and 1980s and are good at painting with foreign themes. They use pen, ink pen, carbon pen sketch and other different expressions to make all kinds of characters and gloomy atmosphere vivid on paper, which has a strong artistic appeal and has become an excellent comic book with foreign themes at the same time. The hound of the Baskerville (painted by Zhang Wenyong, Sichuan People's Publishing House, 198 1), The Signs of the Four (the remaining paintings, Fujian People's Fine Arts Publishing House, 1980), The Study of Blood Characters (painted by Jilin People's Publishing House,1980).
Lingnan Fine Arts Publishing House published a series of selected Sherlock Holmes cases from 198 1 to 1985. Rich in content and fine in painting style, it is unique among many versions. There are 13 species one after another, including the Treasure of Agra, Revenge of Wan Li, Ancient House Monster, Fog, Second Blood Drop, Mystery Ceremony, Dianhua Death Belt, Secret of Cecilia Yip Village, Devil in the World, and Lady Queqiao. It basically includes the wonderful stories in the novel, which embodies the characteristics of tight structure and nuance. Famous cartoonists such as Huang, Pan Honghai, Yu and Zhao Chiting all participated in the creation. These famous artists are familiar with foreign themes, and their techniques are complex and skilled. Some of them are good at depicting characters' expressions with pen-and-ink drawings, while others are carefree and black-and-white contrast. The ups and downs of the story and the wonderful pictures complement each other, organically combine, truly and intuitively show the readers the thrilling plot and horror depicted in the novel, and vividly show the cleverness and wisdom of the protagonist and the sinister malice of the criminal, which is unforgettable.
There are also some Sherlock Holmes comic books, which are series and convenient for collection. For example, Chaohua Fine Arts Publishing House published a set of Sherlock Holmes stories with 1985 * * 10 episodes, namely: Four Signs, Blood, The Hound of the Baskerville, The Tragedy of Burl Si Tong, The Devil's Foot, The Jade Crown Case and The Ridgate Mystery Case. Folk Literature and Art Publishing House also published five sets of adventures of sherlock holmes on 1985, all of which were adapted from short stories, namely, The Second Blood, The Case of the Emerald Crown, Devil's Foot, The Mystery of Thor Bridge and The Death of Sherlock Holmes.
Due to the influence of the artistic charm of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on readers, cartoons of the same name appeared in 1990s. For example, Dalian Publishing House (four volumes) and Hubei Children's Publishing House (three volumes) have published different versions. Compared with the 80' s edition, these books are faithful to the original, with complete stories, mostly in 32 folio. However, due to the influence of traditional comic books entering the trough and the distortion of creation, not only most of the stories are simple in content, but also the painting techniques are rough and sloppy, which is far from the traditional realistic techniques and is really unsatisfactory.
Due to the large number of translations of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes and limited market digestion, some publishing houses began to publish some copies of Sherlock Holmes. Meanwhile, some famous works have been translated into China. For example, nicolas meyer's Seven Percent Solution (Lijiang Publishing House, 1986) is a masterpiece in imitation, and Haunted House and Shadows (China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Publishing Company, 1990) is a collection of short imitations commemorating the centenary of Sherlock Holmes' birthday, which contains many works by famous contemporary artists. The systematic translation of foreign Sherlock Holmes imitations was started by Writers Publishing House. From 1997 to 1998, the writers' publishing house translated and published four volumes of New Sherlock Holmes, including twelve adventures of sherlock holmes by eight writers. These imitations are all translated from the works published by Ian Henry Book Company in Britain. Sherlock Holmes' works are an important theme published by Ian Henry Company, mainly parody novels. Some Sherlock Holmes academic books have been published or reprinted, including Jack Tracy's Encyclopedia of Sherlock Holmes. The four volumes translated by Writers Publishing House include most of Sherlock Holmes' imitations. 1998 Popular Publishing House published two hardcover editions of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes, which actually reprinted the first three volumes of the new edition of adventures of sherlock holmes by Writers Publishing House.
Since 200 1, the popular publishing house has published as many as sixteen volumes of sequels to Sherlock Holmes, six of which are repeated, and there are 30 kinds of foreign imitations (The Mysterious China Ship, The Clockmaker and The House of Booty) in one book called The Mysterious China Ship and Other Stories, so according to one calculation, all short stories are counted as one. These translations are all from works published by Breese Book Company in Britain. The company specializes in publishing imitations of Sherlock Holmes, and has published nearly 40 imitations over the years, claiming to be the largest publisher of Sherlock Holmes stories in the world. The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, an English Annotated Reader, published by Peking University Press, also selected the Sherlock Holmes imitation of Bryce Company, and published six books in English with annotations and no translation. However, this set of English versions of Sherlock Holmes imitations are all included in the popular version of the Sherlock Holmes sequel series, and interested readers can also compare them.
