Shakil Ramai, director of the China Research Center of the Pakistan Institute for Sustainable Development Policy, told a reporter from the Global Times on the 1st that Afghanistan, as a land-locked country, relies on air transportation for direct exports, so its main export products are Handmade carpets, pine nuts and other high-value goods per unit weight. These exports can effectively solve the daily livelihood of agricultural and handicraft workers in Afghanistan. Ramai said that as the domestic political situation in Afghanistan stabilizes, humanitarian assistance and trade exchanges from international organizations and countries around the world are gradually resuming, which is undoubtedly good news for the Afghan people.
Pine nuts are Afghanistan’s main cash crop exported to China and are also an important source of finance for Afghan farmers and local governments. Wang Yu, Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan, said in an interview last year that Afghan pine nuts are of high quality and low price, but they had previously suffered from the lack of bilateral cooperation agreements and had no way to sell them to China. In order to help the Afghan people turn pine nuts into "gold", China and Afghanistan have been in close communication, and relevant departments have gone all out to strengthen cooperation. Finally, in June 2018, an agreement was signed on the export of pine nuts to China. China has been working hard to develop trade in specialty agricultural products with Afghanistan. In 2016, the two countries reached an agreement on the export of saffron to China. In addition, according to previous research by the Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan, pomegranates produced in Afghanistan also have the potential to be exported to the Chinese market.
