Named
Sam Gamgee was taken from the colloquial word for cotton fabrics in Birmingham, and was changed from the name Gamgee Tissue, a two-layer A surgical dressing made of a thick layer of absorbent cotton sandwiched between absorbent gauze, invented by Joseph Sampson Gamgee, a nineteenth-century Birmingham surgeon. Before the Lord of the Rings book, Tolkien originally used this name for a man living in England:
"This is a curious character who often chats and amuses my children. I Calling him Gaffer Gamgee comes from the alliteration of his name. I didn't make it up. It's a childhood memory, in fact, it was a cartoon name when I was young. , the name is a kind of cotton fabric, but I don’t know the origin of the name” (Tolkien’s Letter #257)
In March 1956, Tolkien was quite surprised when he received a A letter came from a man named Sam Gamgee. He said that he had learned that his name appeared in The Lord of the Rings but had not read the book. Tolkien wrote back on March 18:
"Dear Mr. Janji,
I am very pleased to receive your letter. When I see your signature, you can Imagine my surprise. All I can say is that I wanted Sam Gamgee to be the most heroic character in my story, and even though he was originally a wild character, many readers liked him. So you don't think so. Displeased by the coincidence of this fictional character." (Letter from Tolkien)
Tolkien also gave a signed copy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy to Sam Gamgee. But this incident triggered worries in Tolkien's mind. His diary recorded: "For a while, I was afraid of receiving a letter signed by Gollum, which would be quite difficult to deal with." "Tolkien: A Biography"
In the appendix to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it is mentioned that Sam is called Banaz?r Galbasi in Westron. Banaz?r originates from "simple"; Galbasi originates from the village name Galabas. Galabas' galab-means brave, and bas-is somewhat similar to -wich or -wick. In Tolkien's English translation, Samwís Gamwich was replaced by Samwise Gammidgy, who later became the present-day Samwise Gamgee.
Character Evaluation
In one of Tolkien's letters, Tolkien called Sam the greatest hero. He particularly emphasized Sam's admiration for Xiaomei. The mission of destroying the Ring was also completed because of Sam. He saved Frodo many times (such as rescuing Frodo from Cirith Ungol and helping him walk up Mount Doom), and was one of the holders of the Ring. The ability to give up the Ring with self-thought.
One of the key points of The Lord of the Rings is the relationship between Frodo and Sam. There is a strong friendship and trust between them, as reflected in Sam's oath to follow Frodo to death in Cirith Ungol.
Some Tolkien scholars regard Sam as Frodo's orderly. In the British Army, orderlies were the attendants of senior officers. Tolkien also served in this role (he served as an officer during World War I). Sam's job is similar to that of an orderly - he carries out errands, prepares meals, escorts Frodo and carries supplies. Tolkien also agreed with this statement:
"Sam Gamgee is indeed a portrayal of the British orderly during the War of 1914, and he is far superior to me.
