The school was founded in 1949 when the People's Government took over the National Peking Advanced Industrial Vocational School. Its predecessor was Shaanxi Mechanical Institute, which was formed through the merger of Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Shaanxi University of Technology in 1972. It was renamed in 1994 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. for Xi'an University of Technology.

In 1998, the school was transferred to Shaanxi Province from the Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 2002, Shaanxi Province approved the overall merger of Xi'an Instrument Industry School into Xi'an University of Technology.
