On January 20, 2020, the Ministry of Public Security released the 2019 National Name Report. The report uses big data technology to analyze the surnames and names of the national household registration population (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), and the names of newborns in 2019. Statistical analysis was conducted on word usage and other conditions. According to the report, ranked by registered population, the "Hundred Family Surnames" in 2019 have changed slightly compared with 2018. "Wang", "Li", "Zhang", "Liu" and "Chen" still occupy the top five positions, and the population of both "Wang" and "Li" exceeds 100 million. The surname "Wan", with 2.75 million people, and the surname "Ou", with 2.61 million people, both ranked among the "Hundred Family Surnames" in 2019. The two surnames "Chang" and "Tang" ranked 101st and 102nd. The total number of people with "hundred family surnames" accounts for 85.9% of the country's registered population.

The report stated that the population distribution of surnames in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country is different. The surname "Wang" is the most common surname in the country. It is also the most common surname in 16 provinces (districts, regions, city) the most common surname. The surname "Li" is the most common surname in Hubei, Hunan, Chongqing, Sichuan and Yunnan. The surname "Zhang" is the most common surname in Shanghai. The surname "Liu" is the most common surname in Jiangxi. The surname "Chen" is the most common surname in Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong. The surname "Yang" is the most common surname in Guizhou.
