Kaifeng now governs Qixian County, Tongxu County, Weishi County, lankao county and Xiangfu District, Longting District, Shunhe District, Gulou District, Yuwangtai District, and urban-rural integration demonstration zone, of which lankao county is a county directly under the jurisdiction of the province, and the urban-rural integration demonstration zone belongs to Longting District.

The activities of Kaifeng ancestors can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. During the Five Dynasties, Hou Liang, Houjin, Houhan and Houzhou successively established their capitals in Kaifeng, which was called "East Capital" or "Tokyo". During this period, Kaifeng officially replaced Luoyang and became the national political, economic, cultural and transportation center. 1September 1983, the system of city governing county was implemented and Kaifeng Special Zone was abolished. Qixian, Tongxu, Weishi, Kaifeng and Lankao, which were originally special zones, were placed under the jurisdiction of Kaifeng City.
