The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy Hainan Ship is the first ship of Type 075 amphibious assault ship independently developed by China. On April 23, 20021year, Hainan ship was handed over at a military port in Sanya, Hainan, and officially entered the People's Navy. As the first amphibious assault ship independently developed by China, Hainan Ship can be equipped with amphibious armored vehicles, multi-type helicopters, hovercraft and tank armored vehicles, as well as weapons systems such as missiles, naval guns and electronic warfare.

Equipped with a straight deck and dock, it can carry amphibious combat equipment such as helicopters, amphibious air-cushion landing craft and amphibious chariots, and has three-dimensional landing combat capability. It has some similar characteristics with the aircraft carrier, such as a wide straight deck, which is affectionately called "the small flat roof".

This kind of warship is developed from helicopter carrier, but most of them also combine the dock design of dock landing ship and can load landing craft. Moreover, compared with most aircraft carriers, many amphibious assault ship can have more intensive self-protection weapons and do not necessarily need escort fleet protection.

Because amphibious assault ship is the second largest modern warship after super carrier, amphibious assault ship will often become the flagship of the fleet for countries without super carrier or in the fleet without carrier. The United States is also studying the early warning aircraft and tanker models of the Osprey to match the VTOL aircraft on the amphibious assault ship.
