Freud used an ancient Greek myth to illustrate this intergenerational relationship. According to this story, before his son was born, King Raius of Thebes heard a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother when he grew up. So when the queen gave birth to Oedipus, his father wanted to kill him first. He stabbed Oedipus in the foot and threw him into the barren hills, leaving him to fend for himself.

Unexpectedly, this abandoned baby was picked up and raised. When he grew up, he certainly didn't know who his biological father and mother were, so he killed the old man on his way back to Thebes because of a conflict and seized his throne and queen.
