Spinoza (1632-1677) was a famous materialist philosopher in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century.

Spinoza’s original name was Baruch, but he later changed his name to Benedict.

He was born in Amsterdam to a Jewish merchant family on November 24, 1632. His ancestral home was in Spain. To escape religious persecution, he first moved from Spain to Portugal, and then from Portugal to the Netherlands. When he was young, he was taught by Jewish rabbi Moterah and others, so he was not only familiar with Jewish scriptures and laws, but also learned Hebrew.
