If you want to establish your art, you must first establish others
Those who learn from me will live, and those who are like me will die
Don’t talk about others’ shortcomings, and don’t talk about your own strengths; Laugh at the scolding, and smile at the praise.
Don’t call it a day’s leisure
Don’t envy peonies for their wealth, but they are sweeter than pears and oranges.
What is similar is vulgar, and what is not is deceptive. The beauty is between similarity and dissimilarity.
Those who learn from me will live, those who resemble me will die
I am ashamed to be a thief before I die, and I will not leave Chang'an to commit evil and gluttony
I will let you be tortured a thousand times without getting tired of it. Suddenly, I feel light in the wind
Those who are good at freehand sketching only focus on their spirit, while those who are good at sketching only focus on their form. It is necessary to sketch from life and then expressiveness, and then expressiveness and then repaint from life. It is natural to see both spirit and form, and it is not something that can be achieved by accident.
The subtleties of the ancients should always be in the mind of the painting, and the superficiality of the ancients should not be on the tip of the brush. Anyone who wants to come can only imitate its superficial appearance, but cannot understand its subtleties. Based on this, even if it is incompetent, it is unprecedented. To learn from the ancients, we must learn to hate the ancients for not seeing us, and do not hate the contemporary people for not hearing me.
I am learning the art, not imitating others. What I am learning is the spirit of writing, regardless of whether it looks similar or not.
I will never draw something I have not seen.
Don’t listen to others if they want to scold you. Don’t be happy if others want to praise you.
When painting, I first read too many original works of the ancients, and then created a unique painting style that departed from the habits of the predecessors. This is what the predecessors did not do. Although no one knows about it, I have no regrets. Only when you are free and easy and do not seek fame and wealth can you engage in painting. Seeing the strengths of the past and the present, imitating them but not boasting about them. If there are shortcomings in the imitation, let them go without slandering them, and then reproduce the creation of heaven and earth. There are ghosts and gods at the bottom of such wrists.
