After Lin Zexu was promoted to the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, he wrote this couplet in the governor's office:
"The sea embraces all rivers, and it is great if it has tolerance; if there are thousands of people standing on the wall, it is strong if there is no desire."
This couplet warns people: Only by having a mind as broad as the sea and being good at listening to opinions from all over can one achieve a great career; only by being as upright and unyielding as a mountain can one achieve the state of "standing on a wall with thousands of feet".
