Fascism; (English: FASSISM German: Faschismus) is a nationalist political movement that ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943 under the Mussolini regime. Similar political movements, including Nazism, spread throughout Europe during World War II. Fascism can be regarded as an extreme form of collectivism, as opposed to individualism. The original meaning of fascism is transliteration of "binding stick", which is an axe surrounded by several wooden sticks tied together. In ancient Rome, it was a symbol of power and prestige
