Nightingale was born into a well-off family, her father William Edward was a learned and educated man. A man of education, a statistician. His mother, Fanny Smith, also came from a prominent British family. Not only was her family wealthy, but she had also been doing good deeds for generations and was well-known in her hometown. Nightingale's father graduated from Cambridge University and was proficient in mathematics. He was proficient in four languages: English, French, German and Italian. In addition to classical literature, he was also proficient in natural science, history and philosophy, and was good at music and painting. Nightingale was educated at home since she was a child. Her mother was dissatisfied with her because she had no intention of marriage. She wavered between being a housewife, a writer, and a nurse, and finally chose to be a nurse despite her parents' objections. Her father gave her 500 pounds a year (now about 100,000 yuan) so that she could live a comfortable life after work.
