Confucius told us that this student is a filial son at home, can be friendly to friends and people in general, and then loves the country and the world. He is very cautious and keeps his word in everything between people and between people and society. Have a great mind, be able to love others, and love everyone in the world as you love yourself. If a person has done all these things and becomes friends with learned and moral people, he still has some energy left, and then he can study literature. You can be a writer, artist, scientist, etc. Just follow your ambition and do what you can.

Zixia, the younger Confucius, was forty-four years old, and his name was Bu Shang. After Confucius died, he gave lectures in Hedong. During the Warring States Period, great scholars were greatly influenced by him.

Song Confucianism explained "color" as "woman" and "the color of men and women". He said that a wise man, a learned and moral person, would not want women or his wife. Master Nan retorted that a saint would never violate human feelings. "Eating and drinking, men and women, are where man's great desires exist." Human life is inseparable from two important things: food and drink, and men and women. Therefore, Nanshi corrected this "color" to be "state color", that is, attitude and behavior. Jun does not only refer to the monarch, but also friends and colleagues can be called monarchs.

Translation: I can stand in awe when I see good people, and I can do my best to love my family and parents at home. Do things in society, treat people and the country, and give up your selfishness. This is the so-called commitment to the country. When you promise to help a friend, you must keep your word and try your best to do it. If you can do this, even if this person has not read a day, I will definitely say that this person is really knowledgeable.

Nanshi said that the annotation of this sentence has ruined Chinese literati. In the past, if the explanation was serious, it would be called serious. If it was not serious, it would have no prestige, and the knowledge would not be stable. If we don’t have friends who are not as good as ourselves, don’t make friends who are not as good as ourselves. At least they are worse than us in knowledge and morals. So who should Sima Qian befriend? Can the president only make friends with God?

Nanshi explains that "heavy" means self-respect, which is self-respect. "Those who have no friends are inferior to themselves" means don't look down on anyone, and don't think that your friends are inferior to you. Respect yourself first, then respect others.

Translation: A person must respect himself, have self-confidence, and build his own personality. A person without self-confidence or self-respect will have unstable knowledge. We must both respect ourselves and respect others. Don't think that your friends are inferior to you, and don't look down on anyone. Everyone in the world has his strengths, and we should choose the strengths and discard the weaknesses. See the strengths of others and your own shortcomings, and don't be afraid to correct them. This is true knowledge.

The ancients explained: If everyone can be filial to their parents and filial to their ancestors, the social atmosphere will become kind.

Nanshi explains that "end" is the result and "remote" is the remote cause.

Translation: It is better to have a good start than to have a good result. After understanding this truth, the social moral atmosphere will naturally be kind and rigorous.
