Lao She was a Manchu Zhenghongbanner native of Beijing. His father was a Manchu guard who died in action when the Eight-Power Allied Forces attacked Beijing. The pen name Lao She was first used in the novel "Lao Zhang's Philosophy". Other pen names include She Yu, Jie Qing, Jie Yu, Feiwo, Honglai, etc. Lao She worked diligently throughout his life and created many works.
