Story:
Studying hard with one's head hung on the beam, Jizhou Sun Jing's story
People often use the allusion "the head is hung on the beam, and the cone stabs the buttocks" to praise the spirit of hard study. The "head hanging beam" in this allusion is about a Hebei man named Sun Jing.
Sun Jing, courtesy name Wenbao, was born in Xindu (now Jizhou City) in the Han Dynasty. He was eager to learn when he was young, well-read and memorized, and he regarded books as his life. He often stayed up all night reading and studying at night. Neighbors called him "Mr. Closed House."
When Sun Jing was studying, he took notes at any time. He often kept reading until late at night. As time went by, he would inevitably doze off. When I woke up, I felt regretful again. One day, when he raised his head and thought hard, his eyes stopped on the rafters, and his eyes suddenly lit up. Then he found a rope and tied one end of the rope to the beam, and the lower end was tied to his hair. In this way, when you doze off, when you lower your head, the rope will pull your hair, and if it hurts, you will wake up and drive away the sleepiness. From then on, he used this method to study hard every night when he was studying.
Studying hard year after year enabled Sun Jing to read poetry and books, become erudite and become a great scholar who was familiar with ancient and modern times. He was quite famous in the north of Jianghuai at that time, and often traveled thousands of miles. Many students came to him with books and books to learn from him, solve their doubts, and discuss knowledge.
Since then, people have combined the two stories of Sun Jing's "head hanging from the beam" and Su Qin's "cone stabbing butt" together as an idiom to encourage future generations to study hard.
