Tu Youying, a professor of Tea Department of Zhejiang University, studied the detoxification of white tea from three aspects: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PHAs), silica SO2 (inorganic matter) and smog (organic matter). The research team used polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to poison rat alveolar macrophages, and added different concentrations of EGCG for comparison. It was found that the cell survival rate increased with the increase of EGCG concentration. At the same time, EGCG can repair infected cells. It can be seen that EGCG has a good preventive and detoxification effect on cytotoxicity caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The research team studied the inhibitory effect and mechanism of the extracts of Baihao Yinzhen, Bai Mudan, Shoumei and White Tea on the fibrosis induced by nano-silica in rats. In the above picture, A is the lung tissue of normal rats, and B is the lung tissue of pathological rats induced by silica. The lung volume is obviously increased, gray and white, and bleeding spots can be seen. The gray-white nodules the size of millet protrude from the lung surface and have a hard texture. C-F are lung tissues of rats treated with Baihao Yinzhen, Bai Mudan, Slim Plum and EGCG respectively. It can be seen that the lung tissue injury has been improved to varying degrees. Among them, Bai Hao Silver Needle has the best effect, which is basically the same as catechin (EGCG).
The physiological indexes of serum, lung and liver tissue of rats were detected. The results showed that the antioxidant capacity of white tea extract on lung tissue of rats with fibrosis was obviously improved, and inflammatory factors were reduced, which indicated that white tea had certain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Smoking is harmful to health. The mixed smoke released by combustion and exhaled by smokers is the most extensive and serious indoor air pollution, in which the lung organs of human body are the most damaged. Professor Tu Youyou's latest research results on white tea show that white tea can protect and repair the lungs and livers of animals damaged by smoke.
The technology of white tea is simple, and it retains a lot of flavors and nutrients such as tea polyphenols, theanine, flavonoids, caffeine and soluble sugar. It also contains aromatic components such as linalool oxides I and II, linalool, phenylethanol and geraniol. The research team used the extracts of Baihao Yinzhen, Bai Mudan, Shoumei and White Tea to make mice drink water in a smoky environment. Through the pathological examination of lung parenchyma and lung bronchus, it was found that the scope and severity of lung lesions were significantly improved in different degrees. MDA and MDA can understand the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation. It was found that Baihao Silver Needle, Bai Mudan, Shoumei and EGCG all reduced the MDA in mice with lung injury to varying degrees, and Baihao Silver Needle had the best effect. This also shows the antioxidant effect of white tea.
IL-6 in plasma, lung lavage fluid and lung tissue of smog infection model group was significantly up-regulated, indicating that smog successfully caused pulmonary inflammatory reaction. However, the up-regulation of inflammatory factor IL-6, inflammatory reaction and the content of tumor necrosis factor-α decreased in all four treatment groups.
