Cindy Sheehan first appeared in the media spotlight in the summer of 2005, when she camped near the residence of President George W. Bush in Texas to protest the American occupation of Iraq. As a resident of Vacaville, California, Sheehan is the mother of army expert Kathy Sheehan, a war casualty who was killed on April 4, 2004 outside Baghdad shortly after being deployed to Iraq. In August 2005, Cindy Sheehan announced that she would camp near the president's farm until he agreed to talk to her about American policy in Iraq. Specifically, Sheehan called for the withdrawal of American troops and accused Bush of misleading Americans into the war. For the anti-war campaigners, Sheehan's personal tragedy gave her moral authority as the spokesperson of the anti-war movement. However, supporters of the war accused Sheehan of helping and abetting the enemy and tarnishing her son's reputation. Her vigil in Texas attracted two groups-protesters and counter-protesters-and national media coverage. President Bush, who is vacationing in Crawford, refused to meet Sheehan, explaining that withdrawing troops from Iraq would be a mistake and he needed to "move on" with his life. Sheehan then moved the protest to Washington, D.C. On September 26th, 2005, she was arrested in an anti-war demonstration outside the White House. She was arrested again on 2006 1 March 3 1 day, and was accused of illegal behavior for displaying anti-war slogans during President Bush's State of the Union address speech. The charges were dropped the next day.

Sheehan and her husband Pat met with the President two months after Kathy's death. Contrary to some reports, the Sheehan family opposed the president's policies in Iraq, but chose to avoid confrontation ... Sheehan occasionally wrote for the website of filmmaker michael moore.
