Other related matters of conscience

Let me briefly review the Confucian theory of conscience. "Liangzhi" was first proposed by Mencius, and there is only one sentence: "Those who are able to do without learning are their good abilities; those who know without worrying are their liangzhi." After Mencius, Confucianism has a great influence development, but no one specifically talked about conscience. It was not until the Ming Dynasty that Yangmingzi mentioned conscience again. (Wang Shouren called himself Yangmingzi because he once practiced Taoism in Yangming Cave, and was known as Mr. Yangming.) This is because since the middle of the Ming Dynasty, China has begun the process of modernization (of course, some people say that China’s modernization should be traced back to to the Southern Song Dynasty). The ideas of Yangming’s theory of mind and those of its successors are consistent with the trend of the times. The prosperity of Yangming's theory of mind was interrupted by the Manchu Qing Dynasty's entry into China. The politics were highly authoritarian and returned to the Middle Ages in China. As a result, Yangming's theory declined. The renewed prosperity is also the restart of China’s modernization. Although Yangmingzi's academic thoughts have changed, they are more consistent and mainly focus on conscience. When he was engaged in civil and martial arts and fighting in the military, he never forgot to teach, that is, to talk about conscience. A country squire invited him to give a lecture and asked him: "Except for conscience, what else can be said?" He replied in his exact words: "Except for conscience, what else can be said!" He believed that what was lacking in that era was conscience.

Why should we mention conscience again today? Professor Yu Ping has a famous saying: "If philosophy had no meaning, I would have sold cigarettes ten years ago." (Laughter) Philosophy is extremely important to each of us and to the "spiritual state of our times". People today have all kinds of confusions and problems, and it is well known that there are various crises in the world today. But I would boil them down to two points, which is that we have lost two of the most important feelings today: shame and awe.

A friend of mine, Zhang Zhao, posted a post on the Internet "Re-reading "Diary of a Madman"", which basically said: The madman in Mr. Lu Xun's works read the book for a whole night before reading between the lines. I saw the word "cannibalism". This means that in that era, although there were many people who "talked about benevolence and morality, but were full of male thieves and female prostitutes", after all, they were still in the dark and could not bring it to the table; but what about today? Things that I was ashamed to say in the past are now said and done with great fanfare. I am not ashamed, but proud. In Mr. Lu Xun's time, cannibalism was secret, but cannibalism was naked! This is an outstanding phenomenon.

There used to be a famous saying: "A thorough materialist is fearless." In the past, there were people who were not afraid of anything, but they were afraid of the sky and its thunder. People today have completely lost their sense of awe. You can be unscrupulous! At the same time, we have also seen other phenomena, one is the resurgence of feudal superstition, and the other is the tendency of religious belief to revive at some levels. This shows that awe is an ultimate human need.

But why do we lose our sense of awe? There is a view, from common people to scholars, that China’s problem lies in the absence of God. A few years ago, I was traveling between Beijing and Chengdu. On the train, I saw more and more Christian churches in remote mountainous areas. This is a rather serious question: Do we need to invite a Western God to solve the problem? I don't see it that way. Chinese culture and Western culture have different trends after the great transformation during the Axial Period. The God of the West after the Axial Period is similar to the God of the Yin and Shang Dynasties before the Axial Period in China; and after the Axial Period, China’s mainstream consciousness has moved towards secularization and even atheism. Without religious and theological beliefs, is it impossible to find a sense of awe? I think it can, it's just a matter of conscience.

Faced with the serious spiritual crisis in today’s world, judging from the general trend of thoughts around the world, we have two choices:

(1) Along the lines of postmodern deconstruction Go down the direction. According to the thinking of Western postmodern thinkers in the 20th century, it seems possible to make a judgment: today's spiritual crisis occurs because the tradition has not been deconstructed in place, and it should be deconstructed more thoroughly. Is that so? In my opinion, the crisis occurred precisely because some of our core values ??were deconstructed and subverted, leading to a kind of "absolute relativism."

For example, how to determine whether a behavior is appropriate or not is based on the judgment of individual likes and dislikes experienced at the moment. Individuals set standards for themselves based on their own likes and dislikes, which leads to everyone having their own standards. If we continue to deconstruct in this way, we will move towards ethical relativism. Therefore, I have made my own claim on many occasions: Rebuilding the First Entity! Definitely rebuild!

(2) Another possible option is to rebuild tradition. I can say that this is a very simple truth: we can only lose what we once had. We have "lost" the sense of shame and awe, which means that it was something that once existed in the tradition. Of course, we should "reconstruct" tradition rather than simply "return" to tradition. I do not advocate the so-called "return to tradition." Tradition cannot be "returned" in at least two senses: in a phenomenological sense, if there is a tradition out there and we return to it, then it is precisely the transcendent object that should be suspended. Therefore, such a return is inappropriate; in a hermeneutical sense, it is actually impossible to return to tradition exactly as it is. First of all, it shouldn't be done, and secondly, it's impossible. Must be rebuilt. "There is Conscience in the Spring Breeze" is the second collection of personal poems by young writer and poet Li Chengen after "Bianhe, Bianhe". It was published by China Drama Publishing House. The whole book is divided into "Conscience in the Spring Breeze", "Youth. Blue and White Porcelain", "Children of Angels", "Moon Chronicle", "Rain on the College Playground", "Film Poems", "Bianhe, Bianhe" and "Rouge" Doctrine", the eighth volume of the album, selects 200 new works of Li Cheng'en. There is a preface by the author, and the appendix contains the author's more than 20,000-word autobiography "My mental image, my historical studio: as objective and courageous as film."

"There is Conscience in the Spring Breeze" is Li Chengen's spiritual orientation and value judgment. She focuses on what poets should do under the global economic crisis. The cultural confidence that is currently missing is being restored to a limited extent through Li Chengen's "Conscience in the Spring Breeze".
