1. Translation
The knights of Yan and Zhao wore knight's military tassels on their heads and Wu Yue's shining scimitars on their waists. Riding a white horse with a silver saddle, galloping on the street like a shooting star in the sky. Their martial arts are unparalleled, they can kill a person in ten steps, and they can travel thousands of miles without being stopped. They were righteous and heroic people, and after their deeds were accomplished, they even refused to leave their names behind. I recall that back then, Hou Ying and Zhu Hai made friends with Lord Xinling. They took off their swords and crossed their knees to drink with each other. After three cups of hot wine, he made a generous promise, willing to fight for his close friends, and one promise is more important than Mount Tai. After the eyes are dazzled and the ears are hot, the spirit in the chest can move the sky and penetrate the rainbow. Zhu Hai saved Zhao for Lord Xinling and waved the golden vertebra, which shocked everyone in Handan, the capital of Zhao. The heroic deeds of the two heroes are still well-known in Daliang City after thousands of years. Even if they die, their heroic bones are still strong, and they are worthy of being unparalleled heroes. To be a human being, one must be like knights like them, famous for generations and praised by others. Who wants a Confucian scholar like Yang Xiong to write books in vain and die under the window?
2. Creation background
This poem was written around the third year of Tianbao reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty (744) when Li Bai visited Qizhou. The style of knight-errants was quite popular in the Tang Dynasty. This is related to the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty when the national economy was prosperous, urban commerce was prosperous, and transportation in the Western Regions was developed. Especially the customs in the Guanlong area "integrated Hu and Han into one, and there were no separate ways of civility and martial arts" ( Chen Yinke's "Manuscript of the Political History of the Tang Dynasty") further contributed to the trend of young people at that time being interested in swordsmanship and being a knight. When Li Bai was a boy, he was greatly influenced by Guanlong culture and customs.
