Last year, I participated in the 2009 Hope Star English Style Competition. Every day after school, we have to go to English class for training. Near the semi-final of Badong Division, I thought my English level was one of the best, so I didn't need to train any more, so I secretly evaded several trainings. In the question-and-answer session of the semi-final, as long as I answer the last question correctly, I may win the first place. But just because I skipped training several times and missed the content of this question, I only got the second place. At this time, I can't help but think of a famous saying that I often talk about but seldom do: modesty makes people progress, and pride makes people fall behind.
The finals are more intense, because only by winning the first place can you have a chance to advance to the provincial finals. In order to get good grades, the teacher specially invited the ace English teacher from Badong No.1 Middle School to tutor us. The teacher stipulates that I must attend the training on time every day. Having learned from my first failure, I won't make the same mistake again. Every afternoon, I am always the first to arrive in the classroom and the last to leave. Even if I walk on the road and sit in the car, I will recite my speech in front of the mirror and practice at night. Many things happen. After the second round, I tied with Zhang Jianglian. The key is the question and answer session. Who will stay on the stage of the star of hope and who will leave with regret? This makes us and the audience nervous. "Player No.7, please come on stage!" With the announcement of the host, I generously walked to the center of the stage, greeted the judges politely, won the unanimous praise of the judges with excellent play and free answers, and successfully advanced! This incident has benefited me a lot. I think I should learn to be modest and learn more from the advantages of others, not only in this matter, but also in other aspects.
In that competition, I not only personally felt the taste of success and failure, but also really understood the meaning of the famous saying "modesty makes people progress, pride makes people lag behind".
In the world, beauty is everywhere and shines all the time. Rodin, a French master of art, once said: What people lack in understanding beauty is not beauty, but the discovery of beauty.
One day last winter vacation, my mother and I went shopping together. As soon as I arrived at the hand-held cake shop, I smelled a tangy smell, which made my mouth water, so I begged my mother to take out 4 yuan to buy hand-held cakes. As soon as we entered the queue, two young women followed. They are beautiful: long curly hair, white and tender faces, bright eyes, small red mouths and fashionable clothes. I really envy their faint fragrance when they are talking and laughing.
At this time, a beggar old man with crutches begged all the way. He handed a broken bowl to two young women and muttered, "Come on, give me something to eat." The two young women not only refused to give it, but also gave the old man a push. One of them even said fiercely, "Go, go, what a nasty old man!" " "I saw grandpa shaking hands, depressed and limping away without saying a word. At this moment, I saw a little girl in front, just wanting to eat a cake. When she saw this scene, she ran after it and gave it to the old man. I was surprised when my mother said, "This girl has a beautiful heart". "At first glance, this girl looks plain and unremarkable, but I admire her behavior. At this time, I heard two young women whispering behind me: "What a fool. "I suddenly feel disgusted with these two young women. Suddenly, I realized a truth: the beauty of the inner world that is not easy to perceive is the real beauty and eternal beauty.
Time has passed, but the humble girl has been printed in my mind. She is like a beautiful wintersweet in the cold wind.
Master Rodin's words
China is a big country with articles, and Peking University is the cradle of humanities. The two are inextricably linked. If we meet by chance, Peking University will surely become the cradle of writers. The May 4th period is a concrete example, and it has been a vivid example in recent decades. In the literary world of China in these two periods, Peking University people can be described as Starlight Glimmer. I think people will admit this fact.
In recent years, I have been really busy. As in the 1950s, after teaching and administrative work, the "golden age" of having time to read some literary works is gone forever. Fortunately, however, I am not a lazy person.
Han, between "internal worries" and "foreign invasion", I always take time to read some works by young students of Peking University. I have read almost all the literary works published in the school magazine. Not long ago, I read The Past of Peking University, which is an article about Peking University recalled and written by young people in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Some ideas are fresh and lively, and the writing is fresh and elegant, which really makes me feel refreshed. The ancients in China said, "Little Phoenix is brighter than old Phoenix." I-if you allow me to have a seat in it-and we "old phoenixes" can't help but cast envious and admiring eyes on you "little phoenixes".
However, the ancients in China said: "Full is a loss, and modesty is a benefit." I hope you can seriously understand the meaning of these two sentences. It is impossible to "sell the old by relying on the old", and "sell less by relying on less" is also worthy of young people's vigilance.
Everything in the world will develop indefinitely. There are people outside, there are days behind, and the idea that "Lao Tzu is the best in the world" is absolutely wrong. You must have a deep understanding of the vast literature left by our ancestors. It is best to recite hundreds of old poems and dozens of ancient prose, so that they can be placed in your heart at any time and whispered to you orally. This is of great benefit to your literary creation and the improvement of humanistic quality. This is no exception whether you are teaching, researching, doing business, being in politics or being a professional writer now or in the future. For excellent foreign literary works, we should also make some efforts to be concise. This is absolutely necessary for your literary accomplishment. If you can do this, you can integrate Chinese and western cultures, ancient and modern, and create newer and more beautiful works.
There is a poem by Zhu, a great scholar in Song Dynasty, which I think is very pertinent and meaningful. I'll copy it to you now:
Teenagers are easy to get old but difficult to learn,
An inch of time is not light.
I didn't feel the dream of spring grass in the pond,
The leaves in front of the steps have sounded in autumn.
This poem has educational significance not only for young people, but also for us old people. The words are clear and picturesque, so there is no need for too much explanation. Time, for young people and old people, is fleeting and must be cherished. "An inch of time is worth an inch of gold, but an inch of gold can't buy an inch of time." These are two profound words left by our ancients.
You are now in a "quiet dream in the Yan Garden". In front of me is a yangguan avenue, full of flowers. You have to walk on this road for 60, 70, 80 years, or longer, and make outstanding contributions to the people and mankind. I hope you will never forget this dream of Yanyuan, and always remember that you are a Beijinger and a proud Beijinger. This name will bring you beautiful memories, infinite courage, wonderful wisdom and distant vision. With these, you will strive for self-improvement, be in an invincible position, and live your life in vain. This is my hope and belief.

Che Yin, who was born in the Jin Dynasty, was a rich boy, but later his family came down and became penniless. However, he can constantly improve himself in adversity.
Che Yin was sensible and diligent when he was young. Because he has to help his family during the day, he wants to use the long night to read more books and enrich himself. However, his family is poor and has no spare money to buy oil and light a lamp. How did he break through the limitations of objective conditions? At first, he had to recite the contents of books at night, until one summer night, he saw several fireflies flying and small fluorescent lights flashing in the dark. So he came up with a good idea: he caught many fireflies and put them in a small bag sewn with white summer cloth. Because the white summer cloth is very thin, it can emit the light of fireflies. He hung up his bag and became a "lighting lamp".
Che Yin studied hard and finally became a famous scholar, and later became a popular official. At that time, whenever there was a rally or celebration, everyone would be disappointed if Che Yin was not present.
Voltaire, a French thinker, once wrote an abstruse mystery: "What is the longest and shortest, fastest and slowest, most divisible and widest, least valued and most regrettable thing in the world?" Without it, nothing can be done; It makes all small things disappear and all great things endless. "What is this? There are many different opinions, which are unpredictable.
A wise man named Chadiger guessed right. He said: "the longest is time, because it is endless forever;" The shortest is time, because it makes many people's plans too late to complete; Time is the slowest for those who wait; For those who are having fun, time is the fastest; It can be infinitely expanded or infinitely divided; No one paid attention at that time, and later everyone expressed regret; Without time, nothing can be done; Time can erase all the people and things that are not worthy of commemoration from people's hearts, and time can make all the extraordinary people and things go down in history forever?
What exactly is time? Time means different things to different people. For the living, time is life; For people engaged in economic work, time is money; For scholars, time is capital; For boring people, time is a debt; For students, especially middle school students, time is wealth, capital, fate and priceless.
